“Two souls, alas, dwell within my breast”—Faust and no end

June | Cornelia Sens, German teacher

Attending a production of *Faust* is practically a mandatory experience for high school seniors in Bavaria. To have the opportunity to enjoy Goethe’s masterpiece multiple times is a real treat. And that is exactly what the 11th-grade students were able to experience. andand 12grade grade. The mostly very modern adaptations of the Faust material repeatedly give rise to lively discussions and the question of what the Weimar poet might have said about these stage versions. However, in the case of this four-person production, the conclusion was reached that this was likely the most successful one.

This may well have been due to the character of Mephisto, who was played by an actress who also took on the role of Gretchen—the only change in her costume being a switch of shoes. Or perhaps it was due tomodern effects such as laser projections, virtual worlds and AI, which complemented the stage designn and symbolized Faust’s quest for eternal life on a virtual level..

Faust I and II were presented to the students in a modern, highly focused way, as a kind of journey through virtual space and time.

“Thebold decision to stage the play in two hours with just four actors has, in any case, turned out surprisingly well. As a result, Salzburg now has a *Faust* once again that clearly shows someone put a lot of thought into it.” (Die Presse)
