Our boarding school, Schloss Stein, is situated in a breathtaking geographical location. It is surrounded by the picturesque foothills of the Alps, offering a wealth of activities. From first-class hiking opportunities to exciting skiing in winter – nature is our playground for sporting adventures and relaxation in equal measure.
Just a few kilometers away is the enchanting Chiemsee, one of the largest lakes in Germany. Here, our students can not only swim in the crystal-clear water, but also sail, surf and enjoy the beautiful landscape on boat trips.
The Alz, an idyllic river, also meanders through the area and invites you to take a swim, a raft trip or a leisurely stroll along its banks.
Thanks to our ideal location, the cultural treasures of Salzburg and Munich are also within easy reach. From historical sights to first-class museums and vibrant urban life, our students have the opportunity to explore the diversity of these fascinating cities and broaden their cultural awareness.
Enjoy the perfect combination of natural beauty, sporting activities and cultural experiences.
Schloss Stein, once the private home of an entrepreneur, became the founding site of our boarding school in 1948. The unique combination of home and education still characterizes our identity today. The picturesque landscape of the Chiemgau offers our students an inspiring environment in which they can experience nature and culture at first hand. Schloss Stein is therefore not only a place of learning, but also a place where history comes alive.
“Kids, we’re making a school! Who’s coming?”
Ilse Wiskott | Founder – Quote on founding the school

Archaeologists found a Bronze Age burial ground and Celtic arrowheads on the castle grounds, which bear witness to early settlement. Built in the 13th century, the stronghold is home to historical treasures such as the cave castle and a hermit's hermitage. The history of the castle complex is interwoven with the legend of the robber baron Heinz von Stein, who is said to have wreaked havoc here in the wild times without an emperor. A rich saga that goes back to the time of the Carolingians.

The early years of the boarding school were shaped by Ilse and Max Wiskott, who started a boarding school and school initiative for their daughter Isolde in 1948. Ilse Wiskott played a key role in shaping the school with her personal commitment and dedication until her death in 1964.

Under the leadership of Olaf Ziegler (here with his wife Angelika Ziegler), the school experienced a social upheaval in the 1960s. In 1976, under Dr. Peter Wabra, the school succeeded in gaining state recognition and converting the old language branch into a new language and economics branch.

Since 1992, Sebastian Ziegler, the third-generation director, has played a key role in the development of the boarding school. Under his leadership, the school has increasingly opened up to international pupils, while at the same time preserving its German-speaking roots.
“It was a dream to be here from the very beginning.“

The management team at Schule Schloss Stein boarding school is made up of experienced and committed individuals who are passionate about the well-being of the students.

The overall director and school board member, himself an Altsteiner, has been teaching economics, law and business accounting since 1992 and is responsible for administration, housekeeping, janitor, kitchen and a total of around 60 employees together with his pedagogical colleagues. Not only is daily contact with the pupils very important to him, but also the fact that, after highly structured years in lower and middle school, the Steiners volunteer for the community in the school and boarding school by taking on responsibility, specific activities, voluntary service and projects.

A teacher of mathematics and sport, mother of two children, she was a volunteer in the Bavarian Canoeing Association for many years, where she led the training of coaches. After completing her teacher training at a technical secondary school, she finally came to Stein and has been an integral part of the team ever since. Her focus is on supporting and guiding pupils in their academic and personal development. She brings her organizational skills to school management with great dedication, combined with her passion for sport and exercise, which she incorporates into lessons and school life. In addition to her teaching duties, she is heavily involved in the organization of extracurricular activities, including science week, school trips and the national youth games, which she supervises. The children and young people are particularly close to her heart and she is committed to ensuring that they feel well looked after in Steiner and can develop their potential.

Cultural and linguistic scientist specializing in American Studies (M.A.), teaches English and French. Accompanying children and young people in their development and promoting the training of skills for an academic career is a matter close to his heart. In addition to teaching, film studies and theater are very close to his heart. This year, planning has already begun for the third theater production in Stein under his direction. Born in Tegernsee, he is a happily married family man. After several professional stations, including several years at an official German school abroad in Africa, he found his way to Stein after returning to Bavaria. Since then, he has contributed his extensive experience to school life in Stein and, since September 2025, to his role as deputy principal.

Dipl.-Soz.Päd. and licensed child and youth psychotherapist, leads and organizes the team of boarding school teachers, coordinates the extracurricular structures and rosters in the boarding school, study times, artistic, craft and sports activities (called Club in Stein), as well as the planning of the weekends. In addition to his personal interests in martial arts and fitness, he brings a lot of experience from his studies to the educational work at the boarding school. He is responsible for the male upper school at the boarding school and has been deputy head of the boarding school in Steiner since September 2020.
